Boots that last six autumns

Fit, break-in, and the drying mistake that ends a pair early.

Boots are the only item on the Nordra list we will not let you substitute on the trailhead. They are also the item most people get wrong, usually by buying something too soft a fortnight before the trip.

Fit before spec

A B2 boot that fits badly is worse than a B1 that fits well. Go to a shop that will let you stand on a slope in them for ten minutes. Heel lift is the thing to hunt for; a millimetre of it on the shop ramp is a blister on day two.

Break them in properly

Four walks minimum, at least one of them loaded and at least one of them wet. Leather needs to take the shape of your foot while it is soft, and it is only soft when it is damp. Boots broken in dry on pavement are boots broken in wrong.

Then look after them

Never on the stove. Never on a radiator overnight. Newspaper inside, laces out, tongue open, somewhere with moving air. Wax them at the end of the season, not the start, so they go into storage sealed.

Done properly a pair lasts six autumns. Done badly they last one, and you will find out on day three.
