The ridge is a report from one place, right now. When the two disagree above 64°N in autumn, we have learned to move on what the ridge says and check the model afterwards.

This is not folklore. It is three seasons of notes kept by guides walking the same line in Romsdalen, written down at the same four waypoints, and compared against what the app said that morning.

What we watch

Cloud base first. A base that drops two hundred metres in an hour is a front arriving whatever the hourly panel promises. Then wind direction at the col, which turns before the valley does. Then the sea, if we can see it: a fjord going from slate to white is the same warning at a different scale.

None of these are precise. Together they give us about ninety minutes, which is the difference between walking off the ridge and sitting it out on it.

Where the model wins

Anything beyond twelve hours. We plan the week on the model and the hour on the ridge, and we do not confuse the two. Guides who have been here longest are the quickest to say the app is right about tomorrow.

The habit we ask of everyone on a Nordra route is simple: look up every twenty minutes, and say out loud what changed. Most of the time nothing has. The one time it has, somebody has already seen it.

Three seasons of notes from Romsdalen, and why our guides still trust the cloud base over the app.

[17

post-46","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-weather
["GET
